What is Link Farming ?

By aliceaddison1 at 2010-03-20 01:05:49
A web directory could be likened to the traditional yellow phone book directory. With a web directory, you have a bunch of websites that are placed in various categories. Link farms are the exact opposite. They tend to have a bunch of links on a page that don't have any descriptions. If you use the Internet frequently, it is likely that you've come across these websites.

It is assumed that Google is penalizing them for having paid links. In my opinion many directories exist for only one reason and that is to farm links. Link farms were appearing higher in the Google rankings and in many cases were just a waste of time and effort. Directories that are created purely to sell links or get rankings are not worth joining. Links back to your website are important but here's the thing, having links from paid directories with no ties to your business are a waste of time.

Link Farming is a term, used as collective reference for methods used to get inbound links to your website and its inner pages. Lets take a look at basic link farming techniques one at a time, each of the method has to done in a peculiar way, to bring out maximum results. But, unfortunately due to lack of space here, we will be discussing them only in general only because I can possibly write tons of pages about each of them.

"Link Farms" and FFA sites served no purpose to web users. Since Google prides itself on catering to web users (and NOT developers), a solution had to be formed. "Link Farms" were cluttering up the web and making it more difficult for users to find valuable resources online. Google soon began to rate the quality of the links that determined a site's "link pop." "Link Farms" and FFA sites became categorized as spam, and thus contributed no value to a site's link popularity.

When link farms came into the picture, the quality of search results started to suffer. Websites that had little or no relevance to the term searched for by the users started to gain top positions in search engines, courtesy these illegitimate SEO techniques. So, search engine developers went back to the drawing board and modified their search algorithms. Link farming is now considered to be spam and any website that participates or joins a link farm is banned for three years from leading search engines.

Search engines that have too many link farm pages may annoy the users. They can be great for the people that are using them until the search engine bans them altogether. For a short time, these links can boost promotion by a decent margin and this may be why larger companies have chose to use them. However, if you do not want to take the chance of having your website banned altogether, it is wise to steer clear of all these types of links in general.

Link farms were the poor man's solution to the hefty priced, high value links typical of high PR webpages. The premise of the link farm was as follows: instead of paying an outrageous sum of money for one link from a high page rank website why not pay a small fee for thousands of low PR links? In essence the link farms abided along the principle of the sum amounting to greater than its individual parts!
